SOULFLY Mainman Apologizes For WINDOW FEST Cancellation, Suggests New Show

September 23, 2004

SOULFLY frontman Max Cavalera has apologized for the cancellation of their scheduled appearance at Window Rock Fest II last month, saying that the concert was only postponed.

Speaking to Jan-Mikael Patterson of The Navajo Times, Cavalera said that the band decided to postpone the performance because of several factors the promotional company, Rancid-Savage Productions of Window Rock, could not fulfill.

The road and lighting crew advised against the band setting up their gear due to a possible thunderstorm, said Gloria Cavalera, Max's wife and the band's manager.

Cavalera, in a Sept. 10 telephone interview, apologized for the postponement. He is still set on doing a show.

"I'm ready right now," Max Cavalera said. "I was ready to play the day the show got postponed. It sucks that happened. It really sucks."

In a previous story in the Navajo Times, the audience and organizers were upset when the band cancelled and shouted obscene remarks about the band.

"I'm sorry they feel that way," Max Cavalera said. "We're trying to do what is fair and to give them a great show. Not to rip them off.

"I can't control people's feeling," he said. "I'm sorry they're mad at me. I'm sorry they're pissed off at me but I really didn't mean to postpone the show. I'm just looking after them (fans),you know. That's the most important thing.

"Unfortunately the backlash on us, you know, people say that we drove off or whatever, I would never do that," he said. "Most people that know me know that I have a tremendous respect for my fans whether if they are in Brazil, here on the Navajo Reservation or in Australia.

"I never meant to diss anybody especially the Navajo people in which I have a lot of respect for," he said.

"As far as I'm concerned that has nothing to do with it," Cavalera said. "The quantity doesn't really mean quality. You can have a great show and have 100 people, 10 people, 50 people - it's still going to be a great show. That was not a factor at all."

Regarding remarks about the band using indigenous people in their music, Max Cavalera said, "I never used people. It's not inside of me. It's not in my heart to use anybody ... I don't use any indigenous people. Whatever I do is from my heart." Read more.
